INTERNATIONAL MOTHER LANGUAGE DAY
International
Mother Language Day is observed every year on February 21st in Bangladesh and
other countries around the world. It celebrates linguistic and cultural
diversity and promotes the importance of mother languages. The day is
particularly significant for Bangladesh as it commemorates the Language
Movement martyrs who sacrificed their lives for the recognition of Bangla as
their state language. On this day, people pay homage to the Language Movement
martyrs by placing floral wreaths at the Shaheed Minar, a monument built in
their memory. The monument is adorned suitably, and people offer flowers to pay
their respects. TV and radio channels hold discussions and air special programs
on this auspicious day. In schools and colleges, commemorative programs are organized to mark the occasion.
Students participate in various cultural activities including recitation,
singing, and storytelling, painting to showcase the beauty and richness of
their mother language. The day serves as a reminder of the sacrifices made by
the Language Movement martyrs and their contribution to the recognition of
Bangla as their state language.
