A Street Hawker

A STREET HAWKER

A street hawker is a person who goes out on the street or from door to door and shouts or ‘hawks’ to sell his products. Nowadays, street side vendors are also called hawkers. Hawkers sell a variety of goods, and their products are quite cheap. Busy thoroughfares of a city are the favourite place for hawkers where they spread their wares for attracting customers. There are clothing, toys, vegetables, crockery, magazines, CDs and DVDs, and even electronic goods. On any given day, customers can be seen bargaining with hawkers to buy goods. Even women are found as hawkers but their goods are mostly cheap ornaments and dresses. Hawkers pose problems as well. They occupy pavements

and encroach upon roads and impede the movement of pedestrians and vehicles. There are also squabbles with customers. Pickpockets are also active near the hawkers. Nonetheless, hawkers do some good and so we should devise a solution to have a win-win situation for all. Hawkers should be allocated open spaces where they can do their business and the people can avail the goods at a cheap rate.
